  • Free software that can be used to open xml files (8 posts)

At the meeting on April 15th I mentioned some software that could be used to open up xml files instead of using IE for those people who don't have one of the full versions of Visual Studio 2010.

This is called Visual Studio 2010 Express and can be found here: http://www.microsoft.com/express/Web/

I've not used this version myself as I have Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate, but I would hope that it would open up xml files in the same manner, also highlighting any errors in the schema or data within each field. Please remember that this is an express version so will not have all of the features.

    Regards

I was just looking for this when I received the email alert! You mentioned that Visual Web Developer Express would probably be the best bet to start off with?

If memory serves it used to be called Web Developer express, but that may have been the 2005 version. Visual Studio 2010 Express is the latest version so I would go with that one.

An alternative which is also free and simpler to use is Microsoft XML Notepad, I have tested the V2 xml against the xsd and the error reporting and context sensitive help from the xsd is good.

Had a look at MS XML Notepad – seems like a good first option and less likely to be an issue with our IT team than downloading full Studio Express.

I'd not heard of this software, but it sounds like it does exactly what you need.

As far as free software goes, Microsoft also have XML Notepad 2007

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?familyid=72d6aa49-787d-4118-ba5f-4f30fe913628&displaylang=en

Gives a tree view and a xml tagged view.

    Free and works well.

I have used something called XML Copy Editor from http://xml-copy-editor.sourceforge.net/ which has an easy to work with GUI and was ideal for an XML newbie like me. And it's free.

I had to associate the XML file with the schemas in the LIS 19.01 and choose validate and it gave some responses that I could understand and resolve so that now my file goes through the LIS OK (that makes it sound too easy, but I got there in the end!).

    Thanks,
    Caspar
